We get asked this question in nearly every ecommerce discovery call. The honest answer is that both platforms are good — the right choice depends on your budget, technical resources, and how much control you want.
WooCommerce: More Control, More Responsibility
WooCommerce runs on WordPress, giving you full ownership of your store’s code, hosting, and data. It suits businesses that already have a WordPress site, want deep customization, or have specific integration needs. The tradeoff is that you’re responsible for hosting, security, and updates — or need a developer who is.
Shopify: Managed and Fast to Launch
Shopify handles hosting, security, and updates for you, with a large app ecosystem for extending functionality. It suits businesses that want to launch quickly and would rather pay a monthly platform fee than manage technical infrastructure.
Payment Gateways in India
Both platforms support Razorpay, PayU, and other India-specific gateways, so this isn’t usually a deciding factor on its own.
Cost Over Time
WooCommerce has lower recurring platform fees but can cost more in hosting and developer time. Shopify’s monthly fee is predictable but scales with transaction volume and app usage.
Our Recommendation
If you already run WordPress and want maximum customization, WooCommerce is usually the better fit. If you want to launch fast with minimal technical overhead, Shopify is usually the better fit. We build and migrate stores on both.
